It’s the most wonderful time of the year…

The warmth of Thanksgiving weekend will soon be swept away by the Arctic storm descending upon our state as I write this. We are about to get a true taste of winter tonight as temperatures plunge and frigid winds whip up snowstorms.

I used to think winter was a time of death, dullness, darkness. My perspective has changed over the years.

I look out the window
and see the first snowflakes fall
swirling, twirling in a slow dance
and when they settle
they whiten and brighten
winter’s dull browns and grays away.

After a splendid show
of Fall colors,
the trees have dropped their leaves
and are finally at rest
without any pressure
to grow, to perform
to bear fruit,
or do everything a tree
is expected to do.

The earth is willing
to let go and rest
knowing it will awaken
refreshed, renewed
in a new season
and grow verdant again.

Guilt-free, seasonal,
intentional, lengthy,
patient, willing,
meant-to-be time.

Winter means rest.

Knowing which season I’m in, and embracing whatever that season brings me helps me understand that the boundaries have fallen for me pleasant places.
