The book was originally meant for family and friends. I’m in awe of places it’s going, audiences it’s reaching…
This week, I had the privilege of speaking to a group of artists. The event, called ARTalk, is a monthly gathering of creative people that is hosted by Awakening-Artists‘ inspiring visionary and director Cindy Limbrick.
After I shared selections from the book and related stories, we did a short lectio divina devotional. Galatians 6:4-5 is the text I felt led to pick out for mediation and prayer that evening.
“Make a careful exploration of who you are
and the work you have been given,
and then sink yourself into that.
Don’t be impressed with yourself.
Don’t compare yourself with others.
Each of you must take responsibility
for doing the creative best you can
with your own life.”
—Galatians 6:4-5 (The Message)
“The phrase ‘don’t compare yourself with others’ really spoke to me,” said one of the participants, admitting honestly that comparison is something artists struggle with.
The word ‘responsibility’ spoke deeply to another.
Another said that she was encouraged to make a careful exploration of who she is and the work she’s been given, within the context of the boundaries she’s been placed in for this season in her life.
An artist who spoke to me after the event, said she was really convicted by the words ‘sink yourself into the work you’ve been given.’ “I want to really commit to my call as an artist,” she said.
We prayed out loud thanking God for giving us insight, for showing us steps we need to take; and asked Him to help us with our commitments.
Then, everybody settled down to doodle their impressions on 4 x 4″ pieces of paper. We doodled to the sounds of the beautiful and stirring music of talented musician Chuck Limbrick. We tiled the doodles together to form a beautiful mosaic that communicated powerfully what God had encouraged each one of us with.
A dear friend had offered to do henna at this event which was a nice way to top off the evening.
I hope everyone that came went home encouraged, inspired. What a wonderful thing it is to find those ‘connecting points’ that brings us together!
