A follow-up post to my post “on making decisions“…

We are faced with numerous choices and decisions everyday, some more life-altering than others.

Whether we’re pressed for a quick decision or given the luxury of time to mull things over before making a decision, a decision can change course and set the trajectory of our lives.

We saw how our decisions are a reflection of who we are and what we stand for in the post on making decisions. In this one, we’re going to look at important questions we need to ask at decision time.

Make Time for Introspection:

In the midst of swirling facts, opinions, emotions and confusion, resist the temptation to make a quick decision. Take time for evaluation and thoughtful consideration.

Am I under time pressure to make this decision?

What is my motive in wanting to make this decision?

Do my past experiences influence this decision?

Be a Thorough Fact-Checker:

We all have personal limitations. Take the time to ask these questions, to correct facts, to add in new materials and to course-correct as necessary.

Do I have all the facts?

Are my sources reliable?

Seek Wisdom, Confirmation, Consensus:

We all have  blind-spots – things others see but we don’t. Take the time to listen what others have to say and be willing to learn from others.

What do my elders/people I respect say about this? Have I taken the time to hear from them?

Do I have the support of true friends, elders, leaders, people of integrity?

Are there any red flags? Have I honestly considered them?

Think Implications/Beyond the Moment/ Focus Long-Term:

Rather than living completely in the moment and making a decision that may be irrelevant tomorrow,  be challenged to think long-term.

Have I thought through the consequences of the decision I’m about to make?

Am I willing to take full responsibility for the consequences of my decisions?

Don’t Lose Perspective:

At the end of the day, only a few things really matter. Asking these questions will help us stay the course and stay true to what we believe and the God we represent.

Will my decision represent God well?

Will my decision destroy my integrity?

Is there a better choice I could be making that will allow for greater/better impact?

May our choices and decisions reflect love, kindness and grace! May they represent our Creator well!
